Luxury spa retreats in the Yorkshire Dales for a big birthday

Turning 30, 40 or 50 deserves more than a card and a bunch of flowers — these three spas on the edge of the Dales are built for exactly that kind of milestone weekend.

Grantley Hall

££££
Good gift experience

A five-star hotel and spa on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a Nordic-style ice bath and snow room setup.

The consensus

Grantley Hall opened in 2019 on 37 acres at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and holds a five-star rating alongside Shaun Rankin's Michelin-starred restaurant on site. The Three Graces Spa takes a Nordic approach — ice baths, a snow room, and a heated outdoor Nordic Spa Garden — and deliberately caps guest numbers, which the Good Spa Guide singled out with a five-bubble luxury rating specifically for how rarely it feels crowded. There's no fixed spa-day price published: a light spa lunch alone runs £40pp, and a full day with a 60-minute treatment, lunch, thermal facilities and Nordic garden access starts above £200pp. TripAdvisor reviewers are largely glowing about the hotel overall, though at least one detailed stay review broke from that pattern to call the spa treatments themselves underwhelming for a property at this price point — worth knowing before booking treatments specifically rather than just the facilities.

Swinton Park

£££
Good gift experience

An £8m destination spa on the 20,000-acre Swinton Estate near Masham, with three pools and nine treatment rooms including two for couples.

The consensus

Swinton Park's spa sits within the wider Swinton Estate, an AA four-red-star, three-rosette country house near Masham with 20,000 acres to explore, including falconry and other estate activities alongside the spa itself. The £8m spa building has an 18-metre indoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a 10-metre eco-filtered outdoor pool, and nine treatment rooms, two set up for couples. Day-spa packages with a treatment and lunch or afternoon tea start around £89–99pp. TripAdvisor reviews are strongly positive overall — several call it the best spa they've visited — but the volume of reviews means the odd outlier exists too: one review was titled bluntly "luxury spa day it was not," and a few others mention waits or crowding at peak times. Worth booking an off-peak slot if a quieter, more exclusive-feeling visit matters more than a weekend date.

Middleton Lodge

££££
Good gift experience

A 2,100 sqm forest-bathing-themed spa in the woods at Middleton Lodge near Richmond, with treatment huts built among the trees.

The consensus

Middleton Lodge's Forest Spa opened in June 2023 as a purpose-built, 2,100 sqm space built around the idea of forest bathing: a heated outdoor pool, a sauna with panoramic views, a tadelakt steam room, and six wooden treatment huts scattered through the trees, two of them set up for self-applied bath-hut treatments using organic seaweed harvested off Ireland's west coast. Products are organic, from Voya and Aromatherapy Associates. There's no walk-in access — pool and facility time is charged separately from treatments — and a full day runs £200–300pp, with shorter half-day or evening sessions from around £75pp. TripAdvisor reviews are exceptional, several calling it the best hotel and spa they've stayed at in the UK, but a consistent secondary theme is real sticker-shock at the price and add-on surcharges once the bill arrives. This is the splurge option of the three, not the value one.
