Bloody Luxury covers spa retreats, boutique-hotel afternoon teas, chef-led tables and proper weekends away across the North of England — Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and the Lake District, the North East, and as far south as Cheshire and Manchester.
Everything we feature has to clear one bar: would it feel out of place in a "treat yourself" gift guide? If it's budget, family-oriented or purely functional — however lovely a day out it might be — it's not for us. That's not snobbery, it's just what "luxury" has to mean if the word is going to carry any weight at all.
How we rate venues
We're not going to pretend the whole team has personally taken the waters at every spa in the Yorkshire Dales. Nobody who tells you that is being straight with you. Instead, every venue on this site carries one or both of two clearly labelled panels, so you always know which is which:
Been there
Used only where someone on our side has genuinely visited — the whole venue, or a specific part of it. First-hand, specific detail lives here and nowhere else. It appears on a minority of our pages, deliberately: a site that claims to have been everywhere is less trustworthy than one that's honest about where it hasn't.
The consensus
Our default panel, and the one you'll see on nearly every venue. It's a cross-check of independent reviews and the venue's own listing — at least two separate sources, every time — written as honest editorial judgement, not dressed up as a first-hand account. Where our own visit and the wider consensus disagree, we say so rather than smoothing it over. That gap is often the most useful thing on the page.
Prices, opening times and menus change more often than anyone updates their website. We date-check what we can and flag when a page was last verified, but always confirm details with the venue directly before booking.
